Red Rocks is in a tough situation, but not in the way you might think.
The Colorado-based amphitheater, famous for its incomparable natural acoustics, found itself under an unexpected assault, not from the elements, but from dozens of pounds of chewing gum. Thanks to a group of dedicated volunteers, this difficult situation has been resolved in an effort to preserve the beauty and integrity of the legendary site.
The operation was spearheaded by the nonprofit organization Friends of Red Rocks, a group committed to maintaining the splendor of the amphitheater. Despite the amphitheater's open policy against chewing gum, volunteers routinely find discarded pieces stuck under the seats. They reportedly scraped off a staggering 50 pounds of gum that had accumulated in 2023 alone.
“Gum is not even allowed inside the amphitheater, but how can you avoid it? People have it in their purses, in their pockets,” said Pia Valeriana, a volunteer with Friends of Red Rocks. FOX31. “We hope people chew responsibly and keep it on paper and don't put it under the seats.”
Friends of Red Rocks has made its annual gum cleanup a recurring initiative for the past three years. You can learn more about the nonprofit organization. here.
