In this episode of In defense of ska, '90s skacore legends Voodoo Glow Skulls chat about recording in Spanish, influencing Vampire Weekend, trying out Cheech & Chong, and more. Listen above, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Voodoo Glow Skulls are known for their mix of hardcore, metal and ska. While they didn't necessarily invent such a blend of genres, they were certainly one of the most notable acts to do so in the late '80s and '90s. They developed a sound that was distinctly theirs: bright trumpets, distorted beats, and strident vocals.
Founding members Eddie and Jorge Casillas join In defense of ska to chat about their irreverent sample choices, the story behind albums like Who is it? and firm, and taking influence from artists like Fishbone and Skeletones. They also talk about his influence on Vampire Weekend, who they'll be opening for at the Hollywood Bowl on June 12 (get tickets here).
