The video comes ahead of the Atmos re-release Ziggy Stardust album
In front of one reissue of Ziggy Stardust mixed in Atmos sound, a new music video for the album's “Starman” combines the song with never-before-seen footage of Mick Rock.
The famous photographer took the footage in 1972 and '73 as Bowie toured in support of the album. The clip includes close-ups of the artists' shiny red boots and fans' hands reaching towards the stage as guitarist Mick Ronson approached, as well as unusual perspectives of Bowie and his hot red hair singing the song with color and in writing.
The Atmos version of The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Marswhich is expected to be released on September 6, will present the disc in spatial sound. The Blu-ray audio edition includes the Atmos mix, a new stereo mix, and the original mix, which has been remastered. Ken Scott, who co-produced the original album, did the Atmos mix with Emre Ramazanoglu at RAK Studios in London.
“You're right there with the act, with David,” Scott said in a statement about the new Atmos mix. “He was so theatrical that I think being able to put him in an immersive place makes him a really good choice for an Atmos mix. My whole philosophy with it was to make it more like a live experience. And I've even made him move around the scene a bit towards the end, like he would in real life. Hopefully you just feel like you're in the theater with this amazing show going on.”
The reissue follows the release of a box set, Rock 'n' Roll Star!, which included demos, live recordings and outtakes from the Ziggy Stardust era. “The collection captures Bowie's vision for the Ziggy Stardust album from a fractured concept album for what he called “the archetypal rock star Messiah,” to an androgynous beacon of inclusion.” Rolling Stone wrote in a positive review.
