Lauryn Hill and her son YG Marley made an appearance The Tonight Show to perform a medley of three songs, “Ex-Factor”, “Survival” and “Praise Jah in the Moonlight”. The duo were accompanied by a live band and three back-up singers for the dynamic, soulful performance.
Marley, Hill's son with Rohan Marley, has been performing with her on stage since childhood. “Ex-Factor” comes from Hill's 1998 LP, Lauryn Hill's Bad Education, while Marley released “Praise Jah in the Moonlight” in 2023 and released “Survival” this week. The new track shares songs with Hill and his grandfather Bob Marley, who released an album of the same name in 1979.
Marley debuted “Survival” during his Coachella set last month, tapping Hill, Wyclef Jean and Busta Rhymes for the festival performance.
Last year, Hill announced that she would be hitting the road with the Fugees to celebrate their 25th anniversary Lauryn Hill's Bad Education. The tour was hit was a series of cancellations, however, when Hill suffered a vocal strain just two days later. In October, she canceled her appearance in Fort Worth, Texas, after previously postponing a concert in Philadelphia. He later took a break from touring, explaining to fans, “To prevent any long-term negative effects on my voice and body, I need to take time off to allow for real vocal recovery so I can stop the medication completely.” .
Rolling rock reviewed the Oct. 17 tour opener in Newark, New Jersey's Prudential Center, calling the show “legendary.” “Her renditions of 'Nothing Even Matters,' 'Doo Wop (That Thing)' and 'You're Just to Be Good to Be True' were outstanding,” says the review. “All of her lyrics were louder just because of her vocals cutting through the instruments. “To Zion” may have been the highlight of the night, as she sang about her first pregnancy and her son Zion as if she had just written the song.
Hill's appearance at Coachella in April came as a surprise to fans. On stage she performed her songs “Ex-Factor” and “Lost Ones” and with Jean for the Fugees “Killing Me Softly With His Song” and “Ready or Not”.
