Miley Cyrus puts a new spin on the Talking Heads' 1977 classic “Psycho Killer” in a new wave video in a fan-posted video of the singer's cover of the track from her November performance at the Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles. In the minute-long clip, Cyrus trades the original's bass-heavy backup guitar for a fast-paced outfit of acoustic guitar and banjo, giving the track a country twist.
Following the folk feel, Cyrus turns up the vocals as well, crooning, “Cuz my bed's on fiiiiiire/ No, don't touch me baby/ I told you I'm a real live wire,” while messing with the verse's timeline to draw and to emphasize different syllables, making it more of a bluegrass hobby.
She then tells the crowd, “if you know this song, this is the regular part,” before launching into the French chorus, which Miley-fies makes uniquely her own. Speaking of which, Cyrus also completely rewrites the tune and adds her own fresh verse, in which she sings, “I love you psycho killer/ I'mma love you forever/ You know I'll never run away,” asking cheekily the intimate audience if their opinion is “better than the original”.
The video appeared to be from the same intimate November show at the Chateau that spawned the Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 live performance. 1 “Flowers” by Miley. At press time, a representative for Cyrus had not been returned Advertising signhis request for further comment on whether the singer's rendition of the Talking Heads song will be included in the upcoming 16 track Stop making sense album covers; Paramore's cover of “Burning Down the House” is already out.
The tracklist for the Everyone's Getting Involved: A Tribute to the Talking Heads' Stop Making Sense The tribute album is yet to be released, so it's unknown if this is the song Cyrus will cover on the LP, although her name was among those announced as contributors to the Heads' landmark 40th anniversary Stop making sense concert film. In addition to Cyrus and Paramore, the soundtrack is expected to include covers by: Lorde, The National, Teezo Touchdown, Kevin Abstract, Jean Dawson, girl in red, BADBADNOTGOOD, Blondshell, The Cavemen., Chicano Batman, Money Mark, DJ Tunez , El Mató a un Policía Motorizado, The Linda Lindas and Toro y Moi.
It's no surprise that Cyrus gave the song so much personal attention, since she clearly has a lot of love for the band. During her New Year's Eve 2023 special, the singer teamed up with Talking Heads singer David Byrne for covers of David Bowie's “Let's Dance” and Byrne's “Everybody's Coming to My House.”
