Waxahatchee took the stage at The Late Show to perform her song 'Right Back to It'. Musician Katie Crutchfield was joined by bandmate and collaborator MJ Lenderman, who was part of her latest LP. Tigers Blood.
“Right Back to It” appears on the album and was originally released in January as the LP's lead single. The song was written in June 2022 when Crutchfield was backstage at Wolf Trap, Virginia opening for Sheryl Crow and Jason Isbell.
“I'm really interested in writing love songs that are hard and unromantic,” she said of the track. “I wanted to make a song about the ebb and flow of a long love story. I thought it might feel non-traditional, but a little more in line with my experience of writing about feeling insecure or disappointed somehow internally, but always finding your way back to a new one or an intimacy with the same person.”
Tigers Blood follows Saint Cloud — released by Crutchfield in the pandemic — and I walked with you a way, a record with Jess Williamson as the Plains duo. Crutchfield will tour in support Tigers Bloodstarting at her home in Kansas City on April 18. The trek will hit major cities through the end of May, take a summer break and resume in Boise, Idaho on August 19th.
“I made the record a year ago, so I've been in this anxious headspace for a long time and it's been growing,” Crutchfield said recently. Rolling rock. “And now we're finally here. The band I put together for this tour is really great. I think the shows will be very good.”
He added of the album, “This record, I feel at peace with it. I haven't listened to it a ton since I made it, and I've just tried to split it up and put it aside, partly because I know what's coming. I am going to live in it for years to come. I don't feel ready to make another record, I don't feel ready to write new songs for myself. I am ready to go live the purest experience as an artist to live in your songs, that is to play them for an audience that is excited to hear them. I'm sure if you asked me that question in a year, I'd say, “Oh my god, yes, I'm ready to move on.” But right now I just feel good.”
