On Friday, Orville Peck premiered the video for his duet “Cowboys Are Frequently Secretly Fon Each Other” with country legend Willie Nelson featuring Rolling rock.
“Willie kept talking about how the subject matter in this song was more important than ever,” says Peck Rolling rock. “He wanted to have a new life with the two of us.” (Nelson previously covered the Ned Sublette classic in 2006.)
“With all the rhetoric surrounding the LGBTQIA+ community these days, it's so encouraging to have true allies like Willie who aren't afraid to stand proudly with us,” adds Peck.
The video combines clips of queer men and women dancing and drinking beer in a saloon with clips of Nelson and Peck singing and playing guitar under a tree at Nelson's Luck Ranch, which Peck describes as a “dream”. Nelson's wife Annie also makes a quick appearance in the video.
“There's a lot of cowboys who don't understand the way he feels about his brother,” the pair duet in the Ned Sublette original. “And inside every lady, there's a cowboy who wants out/And inside every cowboy, there's a lady who'd like to slip out.”
Peck said Rolling rock earlier this week he believed he would be impressed working with Nelson because “he's a legend, but he just radiates joy.”
Doing the queer-coded piece was actually Nelson's idea. “As an artist who sometimes felt shut out of the country music industry, once Willie Nelson wants to work with you, there's nothing the country world can say after that,” Peck said.
Ahead of Nelson's collaboration, Peck revealed that his upcoming album Panic it will be a “duet album with some good friends of mine”. He has yet to reveal a tracklist or release date, but the cover sees him standing in front of the iconic Circus Liquor clown sign in North Hollywood.
Peck will also be hitting the road for an extensive Stampede tour this summer and will be bringing Nikki Lane and the War and Treaty with him.
