Female artists swept the Big Four Awards at the 2024 Grammys, presented on Sunday (February 4) at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. Taylor Swift won album of the year Midnight, Miley Cyrus won record of the year for “Flowers,” Billie Eilish won song of the year for “What Was I Made For?” (which she co-wrote with her brother Finneas) and Victoria Monét won Best New Artist.
It's the seventh time a female solo artist or an all-female group has won the Big Four awards in the Grammys' 66-year history. This happened just twice in the first 40 years of the Grammys and has happened five times in the last 20 years, which clearly signals a growing trend.
We'll take a closer look at these seven cases, but first we'll discuss one situation that came close but didn't quite measure up to the others.
In 2008, Amy Winehouse won record and song of the year for “Rehab,” a top 10 hit on the Hot 100. She also won best new artist. album of the year went to Herbie Hancock's River: The Joni Letters. Five women – Norah Jones, Joni Mitchell, Corinne Bailey Rae, Luciana Souza and Tina Turner – won Grammys as artists on this album, but Hancock was the lead artist.
Women also won Big Four awards at the 2023 Latin Grammys for the first time in the show's 24-year history. The show took place on November 16 in Seville, Spain.
Colombian singer Karol G won album of the year Mañana Será Bonitowhich made history as the first all-Spanish-language album by a woman to reach No. 1 Advertising sign 200. Mexican singer Natalia Lafourcade won record of the year for “De Todas las Flores.” Colombian superstar Shakira won Song of the Year for 'Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53,” which was a top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100. (Shakira co-wrote the song with a male collaborator, Bizarrap.) Venezuelan singer Joaquina, just 19, won best new artist.

Date: March 14, 1972
Notes: Carole King became the first woman to win album, record and song of the year in one night. He won for Tapestry, “It's Too Late” and “You've Got a Friend,” respectively. Carly Simon took home best new artist on the strength of her self-titled debut album, which included the haunting “That's the Way I've Always Heard It Should Be,” a top 10 hit on the Hot 100.

Bush hails from Texas. The trio – Maines and sisters Martie Maguire and Emily Robison (now Strayer) – co-wrote the song with Dan Wilson. Carrie Underwood took home Best New Artist, and she became the only one American Idol winner to also win Best New Artist.

Notes: Lady A — then known as Lady Antebellum — won record and song of the year for the country/pop crossover “Need You Now.” Arcade Fire won album of the year for The suburbs. Jazz bassist and singer Esperanza Spalding was the upset winner of best new artist. Hillary Scott is a member of Lady A (along with Dave Haywood and Charles Kelley). The group members co-wrote the song with Josh Kear. At the time, Régine Chassagne and Sarah Neufeld were members of Arcade Fire (along with Will Butler, Win Butler, Jeremy Gara, Tim Kingsbury and Richard Reed Parry). Neufeld and Will Butler have left the team.
