On Tuesday, gamers hoping to play games online through their Xbox Live accounts were hit with a massive service outage.
Xbox Live, Microsoft's service that allows players to play multiplayer games online, has suffered a major service outage, with thousands of users reporting problems connecting.
Monitoring site Downdetector noted that user-reported issues began to spike at 2:15 p.m. ET Tuesday, with more than 23,000 holiday reports listed on the site. Many users have reported seeing the message that Xbox Live is undergoing “scheduled maintenance.”
The official Xbox Live on X account, formerly Twitter, experienced the outage at 2:55 p.m. ET.
Per Variety:
The official Xbox support account on X was posted at 2:55 pm ET, “We are aware that some users have been logged out of Xbox Live. We're investigating!” The message directed users to Xbox status page — which was eventually updated to say that a major “Account & Profile” service outage was reported at 2:07 p.m. ET. “You may not be able to sign in to your Xbox profile, you may be signed out when you're signed in, or have other related issues,” the message on the Xbox status page said. “Features that require a login, such as most games, apps and social networking activities will not be available.”
At approximately 8:49 p.m. ET, Microsoft wrote on the Xbox support account that the issues have been resolved: “Users should no longer experience problems connecting to Xbox Live and services.”
PlayStation also has issues with its rewards program
Microsoft isn't the only company in trouble. PlayStation has also had its own problems with its rewards program, PlayStation Stars, which has been down for about a month, eclipsing the infamous PSN outage of 2011.
In the PlayStation app, users are greeted with the message: “PlayStation Stars will return soon in a phased local release. “Thank you for your patience and we look forward to welcoming you back.”
Glad to see the issues being resolved. We're curious to hear what caused the Xbox Live service to go down and PlayStation Stars to stop working.
