Yes' July 24, 1971 performance at Yale University's Yale Bowl in New Haven, Connecticut has often been misrepresented. The band were young and hungry, touring the US in support of their third full-length, the simply titled The album Yes. The performance here has been officially released as part of the deluxe editions of the reissue of this flagship album, but has never been released as a standalone disc until now. Presented in a minimal package, they drink the unofficial, bootleg LPs of the 70s, Yale Bowl '71 will be a welcome addition to the Yes vinyl collection.
The band played just four songs tonight: “Yous Is No Disgrace” and “I've Seen All Good People” on side A here, and “Clap/Classical Gas” and “Perpetual Change” on side B. But those four songs represent Yes's launch into the prog stratosphere and single-handedly cement his place in rock 'n' roll history. Hearing these songs, raw and unadorned, played by a young band discovering what made themselves such a powerful force is exciting. And having this album as a piece in its own right, not as a variation on a larger sumptuous set, is nothing short of essential. (www.rhino.com)
