British music national treasure Shaun Ryder teams up with dub innovator, studio icon and visionary reggae master Lee “Scratch” Perry on single 'Green Banana'.
Taken from the upcoming album 'King Perry', which is released on Tricky's False Idols label (and which he co-produced four of the album's tracks), the single comes backed with a powerful remix from Bristol duo Dubkasm.
“King Perry” represents the final studio album written, produced and recorded with Grammy-nominated producer Daniel Boyle in the months before his passing and concludes a nearly endless discography of his celebrated name.
On the 12-track album, Perry records with an eclectic line-up of artists, including Bristol's Tricky, South London's GreenTea Peng and Happy Mondays' Shaun Ryder, each representing a deeply creative alliance bringing their own distinctive voice to the table. and fluid. and production qualities.
Prolifically active until the age of 85 and with six decades in the music business, Perry's idiosyncratic vision left a deep legacy and resonant influence spanning reggae, rock, hip-hop and dubstep. Once described by Keith Richards as “the Salvador Dali of music,” Perry opened new depths in Jamaican music. Equally known for his eternally youthful and chaotic style of dress, he originally earned his nickname “Scratch” from one of his earliest recordings, The Chicken Scratch, in 1965.
The distinctive creative quality of relentless experimentation combined with a magical guiding philosophy led Perry to collaborate with British producer Daniel Boyle, who precisely replicated the analog specifications found in the original Black Ark studios. The decade-long partnership began with 2014's Grammy-nominated album “Back On The Controls,” released on the revived Upsetter label, and continued with several productions until 2019 with the Black Album, so named because the recording location was Abbey. Road's Studio 2, where the Beatles recorded the legendary White Album in 1968.
“King Perry” captures Perry's accomplished and creative musician, who is joyful, intuitive and always colorful, along with guest talents who sculpt musical textures by manipulating sound space and rhythmic echoes. Released in full on February 2, 2024, it further preserves the memory of a musical visionary and true collaborator, defined by a reassuring force of power, eccentric to the end.
