French indie band Astral Bakers debuted last year with a series of singles teasing their upcoming debut album, The whole story. The record is the product of longstanding creative chemistry and longtime collaborations, with each of the band members playing separately on each other's projects over the years. The band officially formed after their first performance together at Le Consulat in Paris, which in turn led to a back-to-basics approach for the record, relying on simple arrangements and sharp songwriting.
Last year, we shared one of the band's singles, “Shelter,” and ahead of the album's release later this week, they're back with an early listen of one of its highlights, “Why,” premiering with Under the Radar.
“Why” is a thoughtful and understated effort, opening with gentle vocal tones and acoustic strums that mirror the vocal melody. Quick changes in melody and tempo in the first half of the track, with blasts of crazy guitar quickly giving way to drifting rhythmic currents, only for the track to settle into a vintage rock groove in the closing minutes. At times it takes on a slightly psychedelic veneer, at others it spreads out into a heady indie folk bliss. However, in each mode, the band play off each other effortlessly, capturing their perfect chemistry in action as they dance through the song's exciting progression.
Check out the song below. The whole story releases later this week on February 9th.
