snow makeup, pink prom dress, lipsticked teeth, blue eyeshadow and a messy, huge orange wig. That's drag queen for you!
On Thursday, Chappell Roan delivered a flashy, early Lady-Gaga performance featuring some of the strains from her debut album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess in NPR's tiny office. It's a show we'll come back to when it blows up.
Backed by a full band (all in matching goofy, smeared makeup), the Missouri-born star opened her set with “Casual.” Where better to sing “Knee deep in the saats while you're eating me out” than the office of a non-profit radio station?
“I didn't really watch the Super Bowl last night. I don't care at first. Who cares,” he joked. “This is my Super Bowl.” Roan then took out a disposable camera and snapped photos of the audience and her band before the “Pink Pony Club” manifesting in her queer utopia.
“Also that wig. Even though it looks like it's all my hair, it's a wig,” Roan said, before pulling out a dimmed flip phone and wildly sending a text message. Roan then performed the slower “Picture You” and later “California” after introducing her band. “I love the NPR guys. Wait! I'm donating,” Roan told the crowd, which erupted into applause. “Yeah. Not to brag, but I like it, I really do.”
Roan closed her performance with a cover of “Red Wine Supernova” in which her vocals absolutely shined. She also reminded her band: “Be bimbos, ladies. Be dads!”
The new show arrives as Rolling rock named her one of music's Future 25 as the “future of pop” on Thursday. “This is stirring,” he said Rolling rock. “It's amazing to live the life of my little pop star. It's so killer.”
Roan released her album last September. Ranked as the 12th best album of 2023 by Rolling rock. He is currently on tour with Olivia Rodrigo in Offal world tour.
