TONY LOW – ARTISTIC ATTENTION & CRITICISM EP – REALLY REAL
By Ralph Beauchamp
We presented last time Tony Low in 2020 when the 2019 album was released, To New York. Full length, Low created a singer/songwriter tour de force of bold arrangements, soulful lyrics and truly edgy compositions. Low is back again with a new six-track EP titled Really real. TonyThe songwriting on the EP proves that a few years can make a difference. His songs are more mature and the orchestration has been masterfully developed to another level. Really real delivers six brash songs full of dynamic synergy and vivid soundscapes.
In our latest feature at LowI explained our connection. Tony he was the amazing bass player and occasional singer in a band I used to manage. The Cheepskates were part of the 80s garage revival scene, which also featured famous artists such as The Fuzztones and The Chesterfield Kings. I just recently realized that the Chesterfield Kings are currently on sale as we speak. It's great to have them back as they and the Cheepskates have influenced many of today's artists. All of this eclectic music community was rich with memorable and exuberant music. It was an honor and a pleasure to be associated with such a bold group of musicians.
On the record, in addition to the lead vocals, Low he played several of the instruments himself, including bass and 6- and 12-string guitars. Doug Davis provided backing vocals, guitar, piano and many other instruments. Corky McClellan (Drums), Dave Laukaitis (Lead Guitar/Really Real), Nick Stubblefield (Piano/Garden of Shambles), Jennifer Alexander Johnson (Cello), Corine Brouwer (Violin) and Anand Gan (Percussion) also contributed. was produced by Low and Davis (Flytrap Productions) with Davis handling engineering and mixing.
Really real begins with “Big Warm”. The song is somewhat melancholic but the musical flourishes are interesting. Organ piano and acoustic guitar go well together Low'Intense vocals and interesting electric guitar fills. There's a lot going on at the track. To fully appreciate the musical complexity, you have to hear it. Then you can absolutely understand the depth Lowhis wonderful writing.
“Really Real” is next and Low it does something very unique. He mixes psychedelic vibes using fuzzy guitars while combining a cool countrified groove with a doo-wop rhythmic background. The song brings it all together to create something authentic and unique. In addition, the lyrics are touching and somewhat biting. Low pulls no punches.
“Garden of Shambles” is a beautiful ballad with lush strings and a divine piano overlay. TonyHis voice is warm and full of emotional textures. His plea to be reunited with a lost love is absolutely heartfelt. Everything is soft and introspective. “Rapture On The No. 7” has a Caribbean feel with great percussive tones. The melody is imaginative quite romantic. Low transports you to faraway exotic locations with his cinematic vocals.
'Smokeflower' is whimsical and harmoniously enchanting. The organic fills are dreamy and again, the layout is great. Once again, the strings transport the track to a heavenly arena. LowHis powerful songwriting is the sure thing in the spotlight. “Sapien” closes Really real. It's the perfect end to an exuberant release with every musical element really falling into place.
Really real is a new high for Tony Low. Each new release exposes another facet of his brilliant songwriting and fearless musicianship.
