Ska really started to break into the mainstream in the '90s. And yet, even during that big ska boom, only a handful of bands had a real hit on the radio. One of the few to accomplish such a feat was Orange County-based group Save Ferris, who scored big with their cover of Dexys Midnight Runner's 1982 one-hit wonder, “Come on Eileen.” this week in In defense of ska, Save Ferris vocalist Monique Powell talks about the group, the Orange County scene, the popular MTV video and its monumental cover. Listen above, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Powell looks back at the band's somewhat tumultuous history, from their formation in 1995 to their dissolution in 2003 and the 2013 reformation that led to a series of legal problems. The vocalist also recalls the band's accomplishments, including how “Come on Eileen” ended up on their debut LP. “I don't know if I said we were going to do it for the record, I just remember saying I wanted to play that song,” Powell says. “I really wanted to play it live, because I love that song.”
Yet through all the ups and downs, Powell and Save Ferris delivered unforgettable and surprisingly popular ska, all infused with Orange County vibes. Powell discusses how they dealt with ska eventually going out of fashion and shares stories from across their career. There was a time when she sang on Reel Big Fish's “She Has a Girlfriend Now,” and she saw life-changing performances by The Selector and The Queers, and she was the prom band at 10 things I hate about you.
