Over the past few years, Portland-based outfit Bug Seance have created a layered and adventurous sound, drawing from both emo and shoegaze. The band debuted with the 2020 EP, Erasure, followed by another EP in 2022, Searching. They're keeping that momentum going this year with the release of a pair of new singles 'I can always count on you' and 'Aardvark', the first tastes of their recently announced EP, Here I am, out on May 17. Accompanying the record news, they also share another new single, “These Days,” which premieres with Under the Radar.
“These Days” is a relentless and hook-filled effort, which sees the band play with a wide range of sounds and rarely rest for more than a few moments. It opens with a guitar intro, moving seamlessly between deft emo melodies and bursts of fuzzy distortion. Soon after, the band pulls back into a restrained verse, putting the spotlight on singer Maria DeHart, only to quickly pick up the pace before spiraling into an intense breakdown. Later, in the song's final moments, it builds from a space-washed soundscape to a propulsive climax, with rapid-fire drum fills and gang vocals. However, the track's progression flows effortlessly despite the constant restless transitions, with each portion tied together by the band's kinetic instrumental chemistry and subtly catchy melodies.
DeHart says of the track, “'These Days' is a song about the never-ending task of letting go and accepting the fact that the only thing you have control over is yourself. I wrote these lyrics as a form of self belief that I am enough, what I do on a daily basis is enough and my absolute best is all I can do. As a DIY musician in these trying times we find ourselves in now (read: late-stage capitalism), the constant pressure to hurry up and do our best all the time is palpable. This song is a reminder to take a step back and appreciate what we've done and try to do, because everything takes time and energy, and it's seriously not easy, especially when the world feels so bleak. At the end of the day, we're all just trying to do our best. And, to quote the lyrics, “There's nothing I can do to control the rest.”
