For Record Store Day, select record stores have curated a collection of late-'60s/early-'70s LPs from the Detroit label infamous for launching the careers of both Funkadelic and Ohio Players. In addition to Funkadelic's version of “I Bet You” from their 1970 debut and the unique mix of Ohio Players' “Funky Worm” from 1972. Pleasure, The Westbound Sound leans toward Westbound's lesser-known catalog. From The Counts and Denise LaSalle to Fuzzy Hawkins and Spanky Wilson, the collection features some of the best soul and funk to come out of Detroit. Songs like Wilson's “Shake Your Head,” Donald Austin's “Hot Rooster” and the Fantastic Four's epic “Alvin Stone (The Birth and Death of a Gangster)” are some of the genre's best that you probably haven't heard never. Kudos to those Record Store Day stores that are bringing these tracks back to life. (www.orgmusic.com)
