French-American Emcee Napoleon da Legend releases his 28th studio LP. Underground heads should already be familiar with him due to the lengthy discography he has built for himself over the past decade or so, including Coupis the sequel Street Universe, Dragon Ball Gthe Sicknature-produced Colossus of AIDON, Kados or DJ D-Styles-production Invincibl Rap Mislz. Like the last one, this time we have another member of the Beat Junkies DJ Rhettmatic enlisted to produce Logical.
After the title intro, the title track kicks us off with an instrumental that talks about this year being better than last, while “Legendary Legacy” works with more kicks & snares over some backing horn melodies and the title track. it rightly needs no further explanation. Is “Midnight Madness” this hazy piano-boom bam hybrid that talks about making your own destiny before “Pressure” with Innocent? putting their paws roughly on their necks.
“2 Step 2 the Bank” has a lavishly dusty sheen to the beats, providing an anthem for those made for what led up to “The King Walk” that tells everyone running their album to make a point for heavier kicks and traps. After DJ D-Styles' break, “Not Without a Heart” featuring Nejma Nefertiti finds the 2 horn-backed once again talking about the gasoline running through their veins on the warpath and “We Don't Know You” ends. Logical going for a futuristic, if dirty, approach, rebelling organically until his last day on Earth.
Invincibl Rap Mislz became among Napoleon's best material last year around this time and certainly, Legmatic stands out as one of his strongest LPs in a while and is definitely one of the best for anyone who doesn't already own it by now. Everything from Invincibl Rap Mislz Whether it's the boom bap production or the hardcore lyricism of Napoleon is reclaimed, but Beat Junkies founding member DJ Rhettmatic himself takes it to a whole new level.
