Serving as a vehicle to champion up-and-coming bass music artists, NGHTMRE's new EP is as much a musical release as it is an incubator.
bad 2Out now via his own Gud Vibrations label, it finds the producer unleashing a torrent of explosive collaborations alongside artists he was inspired by at the time.
“He DEFECTIVE Projects are all about collaboration! “I reached out to some of my favorite producers from around the world for this EP,” NGHTMRE said in a press release. “I really tried not to think too much about a specific genre or boundary for this, and just focused on writing what I felt. felt great and inspiring.”
It's hard to believe that 10 years have passed since the arrival of NGHTMRE, whose sound remains as compelling as ever. Through its alchemical fusion of seasoned artistry and unbridled potential, the project challenges the boundaries of bass music while nurturing budding talents that will help sculpt the future of the genre.
Featuring six bite-filled vocal bass anthems, the EP is where flawed becomes deeply sublime. Listeners need look no further than their first track, “All Night,” a midtempo collaboration with Rezz and DeathbyRomy that doubles as a masterclass in tension and release.
The same goes for “In Your Eyes,” where Pauline Herr's aching voice, a haunting cry for help, serenades us through an arrangement of muted dubstep drops by NGHTMRE and Jon Casey; and “Torture”, where DeathbyRomy reappears with his haunting vocal surges before being swallowed up by Franky Nuts' ferocious production.
Elsewhere, NGHTMRE throws fire and brimstone alongside Juelz on “Thrilla,” a distorted trap track that features the deft swagger of British-Ghanaian rapper ShaSimone; and “Torture”, an anthem featuring Liquid Stranger and Mougleta.
The jewel in the EP's crown, however, is left for last. NGHTMRE closes with “Brand New Love,” a collaboration with Marlhy and EDM.com Class of 2022 star Ace Aura. A cathartic exploration of toxic relationships and self-destructive coping mechanisms, Marlhy's lyricism resonates with searing emotional honesty as Aura's signature color bass sound soars.
