Eminem has been slammed over making a dig at Megan Thee Stallion on his new track.
The rapper has received backlash for making light of Megan’s 2020 shooting in his new single, Houdini.
29-year-old Megan, whose real name is Megan Pete, was shot in the foot by rapper Tory Lanez at a house party. He was eventually convicted and sentenced to 10 years in prison for the offence.
The first verse of Houdini features wordplay referencing the incident, with Eminem, 51, rapping, “If I was to ask Megan Thee Stallion if she would collab with me would I really have a shot at a feat?”.
“Feat” is both short for “featuring”, the word used to describe musical guest appearances, and a homophone for the word “feet”.
Numerous fans expressed disappointment with Eminem, real name Marshall Mathers, for what they viewed as making light of violence against women.
“F**k this guy! Men love to bring up traumatic moments in women’s lives for attention,” one wrote on X/Twitter. “Leave Megan alone.”
“megan gets so many unprovoked jokes about her shooting, it’s disgusting and weird,” wrote another.
“i raise the question again, what is so funny about a black woman getting shot in her foot,” wrote another, adding, “why is it the butt of the joke every f**king rap song? i don’t get it.”
One fan summed up the common sentiment, writing: “A man, especially a white one, making light of a black woman’s trauma will never hit for me”.
