Lorde certainly seems to be teasing her long-awaited fourth album. But in an Instagram post on Tuesday night (June 4) the 27-year-old singer raised more questions than she answered thanks to a series of cryptic photos and a caption filled with a jumble of unexplained rune-like images.
“Use existing tools where possible,” Lorde wrote, followed by what looked like a ZapfDingbats spree, including a copyright symbol, three different L's, the number four in parentheses, and a recycling logo. “If the tools don't exist, you are spiritually obligated to create them,” he added along with an even larger series of confusing images, with the repeating series of Ls, another 4 and an assortment of stars, the number 27, and what appeared to be a card Tarot, the symbol of infinity, a shark, a rabbit and an Egyptian figure.
What does all this mean? Lorde offered no explanation, and the accompanying photos didn't really help, consisting of a photo of her in an all-black outfit looking over a balcony and then spitting on said balcony, holding a pill in her hand. The word 'spit' was emblazoned on it, as well as a bedside table with a pile of books and an ashtray filled with gold jewelery and a close-up of her in a swimming pool. The post is currently the only offering on her Insta account, whose tagline reads: “THE SUBJECTS ARE ALWAYS THE SAME—A RETURN TO INNOCENCE—THE MYSTERIES OF BLOOD—A GLANCE FOR THE TRANSCENDENT.”
At press time there was no clear information regarding Lorde's 2021 follow-up Solar power album. In December, she offered an equally confusing update, posting a photo of herself in striped pajamas in which she appeared to be listening to something while looking into the camera with the caption “listening to myself.”
He teased some new songs during a gig at the UK's Boardmasters festival last summer, with song sleuths speculating that the tracks might be called “Silver Moon” and “Invisible Ink”. Responding to fans freaking out over what appeared to be L4 season just around the corner, Lorde wrote at the time, “We're not NEAR you guys… I just have so much hype to let you know… start your excitement at low heat and simmer it .. building stamina for this chapter.”
The singer, who is an expert at staying out of the limelight between albums, opened up in September in an emotional letter to fans in which she revealed she was “living with heartbreak again”. The note described both emotional and physical pain, explaining, “It's different but the same. I hurt all the time, I forget why and then I remember. I don't try to hide from pain, I understand now that pain is not something to hide from, that in fact there is great beauty in moving with it. But sometimes I get bored of being with myself.”
