The music scene in Colombia mourns the death of Dr. Velásquez (real name: Daniel Alejandro Velásquez Franco), a prolific hitmaker, artist manager and entrepreneur who died on June 8.
Police found Velásquez and his girlfriend, Sofia Valdez, shot to death in the artist's home located in Envigado (located southeast of Medellín, Colombia). The devastating news was confirmed by Velásquez's record label, JMW Music, in a official statement posted on social media.
“With deep pain, we inform you of the death of Dr. Velásquez, famous singer, composer, manager, businessman and paisa dreamer,” the message reads in Spanish. “Dr. Velásquez was a pioneer in the Medellin music scene, being the founder of the biggest and first reggaeton clubs in our city. His legacy and passion for music left an indelible mark on the industry and in the hearts of those who knew him. In this time of pain, we ask for prudence and respect for his family, friends and colleagues. We appreciate your understanding and support during these difficult times. We join in praying for his eternal rest and solidarity with all who feel his departure.”
In a separate statement, the label clarified that “although the events are being investigated, judicial authorities have ruled out suicide among the cases. Thanks to the quick and effective action of the authorities, the main suspect in the double homicide is already in custody.”
Velásquez — who had a solo singing career from 2014 to 2018 — has boosted the music careers of many Colombian stars, including Reykon, Maluma and J Balvin. In 2019, he discovered groundbreaking artist Blessd and signed him to JMW Music. The two attended Billboard Latin Music Week 2022 together, while Blessed participated in the “Making the Hit Live!” panel with Ovy on drums.
“A lot of growth and life experiences, regardless of breaking our professional ties,” the Colombian artist said of his former manager in his Instagram Stories. “This has affected me. Peace to your grave.”
Artists such as J Balvin, Maluma and emerging actor El Clooy, who was recently managed by Dr. Velásquez, also reacted to his death on social media.
