The opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics just got a whole lot more metal: acclaimed French band Gojira have been revealed among the musical acts set to perform during Friday's (July 26) ceremony.
French newspaper The Parisian and Time is over The pair report that Gojira's performance will feature a collaboration with opera singer Marina Viotti, who has previously “experimented with jazz, gospel and heavy metal,” according to their website.
Does that mean Gojira will only provide musical accompaniment while Viotti sings? Or will we hear some agonized grunts at the Olympics?
Metal fans who were unable to attend the ceremony should now be more willing to tune in and find out. Gojira certainly stands out among the other artists: Céline Dion, Lady Gaga and Aya Nakamura. Stage director Thomas Jolly is orchestrating the opening ceremony, which traditionally celebrates the local heritage and culture of the host country.
For Gojira, it marks another milestone in the career of the long-running band that formed in the French commune of Ondres in 1996. Fans will be able to catch the band in the U.S. when Gojira supports Korn on the latter's headlining U.S. tour this fall (get tickets here). here).
The opening ceremony for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games will air at 1:30 p.m. ET on Friday (July 26) on streaming platforms NBC, Peacock and NBC Olympics.
