On this week's (October 11) episode of the Biggest Pop Stars of the 21st Century podcast, we wrap up our final 15 list with a pop icon so legendary you can identify him by a letter — and then a quick look at those numbers 25-11 artists, with the help of a special guest.
First, we recap the rise, fall and rise of Usher — who began the 21st century as one of the world's biggest pop stars and spent the next five years even bigger, with a 2004 that rivals almost any other single-year peak this year the century. With host Andrew Unterberger Bulletin board staff writer Kyle Denis and R&B/Hip-Hop chart director Trevor Anderson to recall the highs of Usher's career, the gradual decline that followed, and the comeback of recent years that validated his legacy and allowed everyone to remember what huge part of pop music and culture that has been around for a quarter of a century.
Next, we welcome our first external guest to the Greatest Pop Stars podcast in AJ Marks, moderator of the hon r/Popheads forum (and host of the astral Main Pod Girl podcast). AJ shares how the Popheads community has reacted to the list so far, (kindly) airs some of his own gripes about artists he feels were unfairly ranked or relegated to the Honorable Mentions list, and helps us look forward to the top 10 list with some of his own hopes and predictions. (It also helps do justice to a couple of artists who even stopped short of Honorable Mentions via our categories at the end of the pod.)
