Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo They may be powerful witches now, but years ago, they were just witches with big dreams.
And in a new Xfinity ad that premiered on Tuesday (November 12), fans are reminded of the long yellow brick road both women took to achieve their dreams through the cast in Badstarring “Yes, And?” pop star as Glinda and the Pinocchio actress as Elphaba. Directed by Bad filmmaker Alice Brooks, the two-minute spot opens with two little girls who look like a young Grande and Erivo watching separately The Wizard of Oz on their home televisions and engage in musical theatre.
As the girls grow up, the real Grande and Erivo step in to play their younger selves. Viewers see the temporarily brunette-again REM Beauty founder type her most iconic 2011 tweet — “I loved watching Wicked again… It made me realize again how much I want to play Glinda at some point in my life!” — and the Tony Award winner belts out a song before the two women finally meet on an empty soundstage, holding hands.
In a behind-the-scenes video posted the same day as the ad – which shows shots of the two stars blocking scenes and listening intently to Brooks' instructions – the director explained that the ad is “about destinies colliding ». “That was very important to me [Grande and Erivo] they feel real and raw and tangible, and that other young kids – and adults, anyone who has a dream – will be able to relate to it,” the director added. “The story just flows seamlessly together as we cut into their lives.”
Both videos come just 10 days away from the premiere of the first one Bad film, with the second part hitting theaters a year later. Leading up to the arrival of Part 1, Erivo, Grande and the rest of the cast have traveled the world to attend various premieres, from Australia to Los Angeles and — most recently — Mexico City. At the screening on Monday (November 11) at the Auditorio Nacional, the Harriet star and Victorious The alum looked stunning in a gothic black dress and a pearl gown, respectively, and at one point held each other's hands while she looks emotional as fans on the red carpet began to cheer, “Bad! Bad! Bad!”
