Moses “Shyne” Barrow is preparing for the release of his candid The Honorable Shy documentary, which will be released on Hulu on November 18.
The former Bad Boy rapper turned politician stopped by the Tamron Hall Exhibition on Wednesday (November 13), where he discussed overcoming adversity, Belize and his tumultuous relationship with his embattled former boss Sean “Diddy” Combs.
Hall pressed Shyne to reunite with Diddy to perform “Bad Boyz” with him at the 2022 BET Awards, which he called a “legacy moment” and an opportunity to honor hip-hop as well as Belize, where he serves as a leader of the opposition in the House of Representatives of Belize. “I didn't want to do it, but he said, 'Listen, this is about Belize. Imagine this platform,” Shyne explained.
He then brought up a moment on stage when Diddy – who is currently behind bars awaiting trial after being accused of sex trafficking and extortion – referred to Shine as his “brother” after everything they've been through.
“I wish I was his brother in 2000 when we were on trial,” Shyne quipped in reference to their impact after the 1999 New York nightclub shooting that saw him charged and Diddy walk away without killing. “I wish I had been his brother for the last 26 years when my mom, who is here with me, never got any help. He never helped to dry her tears.'
Shyne was sentenced in 2001 to a decade behind bars on first-degree assault, weapons possession and reckless endangerment charges, while Diddy was acquitted of gun possession and bribery charges in the case.
“I keep putting in context without spitting on somebody's grave that this is the person who ruined my life,” she told Hall. “You listen to my mom, she's probably going to start crying when she gets on that couch. People ask, “Do you think he did these things?” Well, I know what he did to my family, so there are possibilities.”
After serving eight years in prison, Shyne was released in 2009, but was immediately deported to Belize, where he began his redemptive arc and turned to a career in politics.
I went ahead and healed myself, she thought. “I didn't see him shoot, but I know he made me take the fall. I know he called witnesses to testify against me. We sat here and I said, “Please don't call this witness. This witness will destroy me, and the witness lies.' So I had to tell this truth.”
