Sleater-Kinney has shared “Untidy Creature,” another single from her upcoming album. small rope.
“Untidy Creature” is slower paced than your average Sleater-Kinney tune, but keeps the energy going with a cacophony of booming electric guitars: “And it feels like we're broken/And I'm holding the pieces so tight/And You can try to tell me that I am nothing/And that I have no wings to fly.”
“'Untidy Creature' was the first song we wrote for small rope, although we didn't know it at the time; “We weren't sure if we were working on another album,” the band said in a press release. “We were also worried that it had been too easy, the song featured two elements that come very naturally to Sleater-Kinney: a big guitar riff and an even bigger vocal. But as the year went by and our choices and bodily autonomy diminished, our feeling about the song changed. It became a gift, a place to put our darkest fears and deepest hopes. “Sometimes we feel trapped or angry and yet we breathe.”
To tie the music video into the song's themes, Sleater-Kinney turned to Australian freediver Amber Bourke, who was holding her breath underwater in a bathtub. “For the video, we wanted images that addressed the themes that permeate small rope: uncertainty, unease, urgency, all the in-between and bewildering states we are forced to reckon with,” the band added. “We love the tension created by an act that defies both custom and comfort.”
