Attendees at the 2024 Met Gala didn't just get a rare treat Ariana Grande concert on Monday night (May 6), but also an exclusive look at what the singer and Cynthia Erivo's voices will sound like together as Glinda and Elphaba in the upcoming Bad movies.
The 30-year-old pop star was tasked with delivering an ethereal performance to match the theme of this year's event, 'Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion', and she nailed it. First, a “sleeping” Grande was carried into the Metropolitan Museum of Art event space after the red carpet by a troupe of fairy-like dancers as she played a gorgeous orchestral composition, as captured in a video the Grammy winner later posted to Instagram and TikTok. .
After making her entrance, Grande “woke up” and began singing Disney's “Once Upon a Dream.” Sleeping Beauty as the audience applauded. Dressed in an orange chiffon dress, she continued to perform her Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hits. 1 “Yes, And?” and “We Can't Be Friends” from her new album Eternal sunshineas well as some of her earlier smashes, '7 Rings' and 'Into You'.
One of the biggest highlights from her whimsical showcase was when Erivo — with whom Grande had walked the red carpet on the Met steps earlier that night — joined her on stage. The pair harmonized their voices for a duet of Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston's “When You Believe,” along with a group of backup gospel singers.
“@cynthiaerivo I love you,” the REM Beauty founder wrote on Instagram Stories, sharing a clip of the show-stopping duo.
He also talked about performance on TikTok. “I had the honor and most special moment of being performed at the @metmuseum at @maisonmargiela by the one and only, most brilliant angel of all @jgalliano (how I cried in the right way!!!!)… the work on this show was an experience you will cherish forever” he captioned it a video. Her note included messages of thanks to Vogue editor Anna Wintour, Baz Luhrmann and others. Last but not least, he gave a shout out to Erivo. “Thank you to the divine and magical @cynthiaerivo for joining me at the end and lighting up the museum brighter than any star in the sky. it was an honor to have you and to sing with you as always. I love you !”
Grande and Erivo weren't alone Bad stars to appear at the Met Gala. The two women were also joined by Jeff Goldblum, who will play the Wizard of Oz in John M. Choo's two-part duology — the first part of which hits theaters this Thanksgiving — as well as Jonathan Bailey, who will play Fiero.
Her first meeting since 2018, Grande attended the event – which was hosted by Zendaya, Bad Bunny, Jennifer Lopez and Chris Hemsworth – in a custom white gown designed by Loewe creative director Jonathan Anderson, with a bodice made from entirely from mother of pearl. “I loved the tie-in of paleness and the little shades of pink and green for Glinda's bubble and for Wicked,” she said.
