He's not sorry!
On Friday, Beyoncé released her album Cowboy Carter, which features a modern rendition of Dolly Parton's classic “Jolene” and an interlude from Miss Parton herself. Queen Bey's new version serves as a sequel Lemonade“Sorry”, just a rebrand for the infamous “Becky with the good hair”.
Track nine hears an intro to the song from Dolly. “You know that man with the good hair you're singing about?” she asks. “She reminded me of someone I used to know, except she has flaming bricks of brown hair. Bless her heart! Just a different colored hair, but it hurts just the same.”
After the intermission, Beyoncé's “Jolene” begins with the singer following the same melody as the original 1973 track with some echo elements. Queen Bey then makes minor changes to the lyrics, bringing them up to date for 2024 and crafting them for her own story: “I'm warning you: don't come for my man,” she sings at the beginning, taking a grittier approach. the meddling mistress.
“You're beautiful beyond all comparison, it takes more than beauty to make eye contact between a family and a happy man,” sings Beyoncé. “Joline, I'm a woman too/The games you play ain't nothing new/So you don't wanna not live with me, Joline.”
“I've been deeply in love for 20 years/I raised this man, I raised his kids/I know my man better than he knows himself,” she continues. “I can easily see why you're attracted to my man, but you don't want the smoke/So shoot with someone else/You heard me!”
The song ends with Beyoncé joined by an angelic choir as they repeat the song's title and Hussy's new nickname. In the lyrics, Beyoncé takes a more forceful, menacing approach compared to Parton's pleading words in the original.
Given Parton's introduction, the lyrics seem to continue the story of “Sorry” from 2016 Lemonade, in which Beyoncé sings about a woman sleeping with her husband. (Although he has never confirmed that the lyrics are about Jay-Z, it has long been speculated that the lyrics are about an alleged relationship.) “She only wants me when I'm not there/Better call Becky with the good hair. sings on “Sorry.”
Queen Dolly – who also features on the track “Tyrant” – has been incredibly supportive of the new version of Beyoncé's song. After Bey revealed the tracklist for Cowboy CarterParton wrote on Instagram, “Play the original while you wait for @beyonce's 'Jolene'.”
Parton revealed that Queen Bey had recorded a cover of her iconic song earlier this month. “I think she recorded 'Jolene,' and I think it's probably going to be on her country album, which I'm really excited about,” Parton said. “I love her! She's a beautiful girl and a great singer.”
During one interview with Big issue In 2020, Parton said she had “always hoped” that Bey would become one of the hundreds of artists to record a cover of the track. “Nobody's ever had a really big hit,” Parton said of the “Jolene” covers. “I've always hoped that someone can do it someday, someone like Beyoncé.”
