Billie Eilish stopped by tonight's show to talk about her Grammy-nominated hit single “What Was I Made For?” and took the opportunity to tease new music. Speaking to host Jimmy Fallon, Eilish said that she's “almost done” with the album she's making.
“At some point you will know more, but I'm not going to say anything more,” Eilish confirmed despite Fallon's insistence.
Elsewhere in the interview, the musician talked about how she and her brother Finneas came to write and record “What Was I Made For?” for Greta Gerwig Barbie.
“It was actually so random how this happened,” Eilish explained. “I remember there was a time last year when Finneas came up to me and said, 'Dude, would you like to do a song for the Barbie Movie?'”. She recalled being surprised and thinking, “What does that mean?” The duo eventually had a FaceTime call with Gerwig and Mark Ronson, who Eilish described as “friendly, casual and cool.”
“Greta basically walked us through the stage they were on and told us about it,” Eilish told Fallon. A month later they went to the film studio, where Gerwig showed them footage from the film.
“She told me, 'Anything you want to do, you can do it,'” Eilish told Fallon. “'You can do anything. And if you don't want to do anything, don't do anything.'…She said, 'If you're inspired, that's great and if you're not, that's totally fine.' And we said, 'Shut up.' Tell us what you want us to do!'”
Of being a part of the hit film, she added: “I felt like it brought women together in a way that I feel like I haven't felt a part of and it made me feel really good. And I also felt like I was bringing people together. It felt like we were all having the experience of a lifetime, you know?
Eilish then teased her upcoming appearance on Saturday night live, set for tomorrow. The show, which features Kate McKinnon as host, will mark Eilish's third time as a musical guest.
The singer previously hinted at her follow-up Happier than ever in an interview with Outdoor dining. “There's a lot of music coming,” she said. “There's a whole album of music on the way. “We're in the final stages of making it, so that doesn't mean it's about to come out, but it's getting there and it's very exciting.”
