Drumeo's “For the First Time” video series puts professional drummers on the spot, forcing them to improvise over notable songs they've never heard before. The latest clip of “First Time” from the instructional platform shows Billy Joel drummer Liberty DeVitto in front of the cameras.
As we saw in previous clips in which Red Hot Chili Peppers' Chad Smith was challenged to play a Thirty Seconds to Mars song and Dream Theater's Mike Portnoy faced with a Nickelback tune, Drumeo's engineers were delighted to find a song that It is both new and challenging. the drummer In the case of DeVitto, 73, he was presented with “My Own Summer (Shove It)” by Deftones.
Initially, DeVitto begins taking notes while listening to a drumless version of the iconic around the fur can opener. But when the chorus hits and Chino Moreno's screams come, DeVitto drops his pen and shrugs desperately, much to the delight of the Drumeo team. Interestingly, the video captures his handwritten notes. For the chorus, DeVitto simply wrote: “smash shit.”
He was clearly going in blind, as his first take is much faster and more frenetic than Deftones drummer Abe Cunningham's slower, more measured kick and snare combos. DeVitto cleans things up on the second take of him before finally setting the heavy, punchy pace of the real track on the third take of him. Overall, his use of the ride cymbal is much more active than Cunningham's, which is not unexpected given the former's pop-rock background.
After his final performance, DeVitto is played the original track with Cunningham's drums, prompting DeVitto to stand up from his kit and begin head-banging to the cadenza.
“That's fucking cool,” DeVitto admitted of playing Cunningham. “He's definitely a Bonham fan, 'boom-kat'; Bonham would play it like that.”
