Brett Favre looks back on the days leading up to the death of his friend Toby Keith.
“I think at the end he was just tired,” the former NFL quarterback said TMZ Sports of Keith, who died on Monday (February 5) of stomach cancer. “He told me that when we had our conversation, he said, 'Brett … whatever happens, I'm okay with it.'
Favre noted that he would call Keith every three months to check on him, though he was recently told some troubling news. “He said, 'I came off chemo and it probably did more damage than the cancer did,'” Favre recalled. “And he said, 'I just hope I didn't quit too late, but … I'm grateful to have had the opportunity to play some shows. I'm done.”
As for remembering his friend, the Green Bay Packers star said he'll “remember him smiling and yelling and screaming and having a lot of fun.”
“He was the best,” he added.
The country icon – known for anthems like “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American)” and “Made in America” - died “peacefully” after a two-year battle with stomach cancer. He was “surrounded by his family”, according to a statement on its official website. “He fought his fight with grace and courage.” Keith was diagnosed with cancer in 2021 and broke the news to fans a year later, telling them he was undergoing chemotherapy, radiation and surgery.
