Bruce Springsteen’s mum, Adele Ann Springsteen, has died aged 98.
The 74-year-old singer-songwriter took to Instagram on Thursday to announce that his mum, Adele, passed away on Wednesday, more than 10 years after she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.
“Adele Springsteen – May 4, 1925 – January 31, 2024,” Bruce wrote alongside a clip of him and his mum dancing to swing music together.
In the caption of the post, the Dancing in the Dark hitmaker wrote the lyrics to his 1998 song The Wish, which was written for his mother.
Adele often attended Bruce’s concerts. She was well known to Bruce’s fans as the mother and son duo often danced together on stage.
In an appearance on The Today Show in 2021, Bruce opened up about his mother’s battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
“She’s 95 and she’s 10 years into Alzheimer’s and that’s taken a lot away from us,” he said at the time. “But the need to dance hasn’t left her.”
“She can’t speak. She can’t stand. She can’t feed herself. But when she sees me, there is always a smile. Still a smile. And there’s still a kiss,” the musician continued. “And there’s a sound which she makes when she sees me. It’s just the sound but I know it means ‘I love you.'”
Adele, who was born in Brooklyn, New York, was married to Douglas Springsteen until his death in 1998. The couple have three children together, Bruce, Virginia and Pamela.
