Cher's son, Elijah Blue Allman, has opposed his mother's efforts to place him in conservatorship, arguing that she doesn't need to and that Cher is “unfit to serve” as his conservator.
Allman filed the plea last week, fending off his mother's arguments that he should gain control of his finances because of his struggles with mental health and substance abuse. Allman also objected on the grounds that if he needed alimony, Cher did not have priority since Allman was still married.
Arguing against the conservator, Allman said he had been working to get his finances in order and was “capable” of managing his own financial resources as well as “resisting fraud and undue influence” (Allman receives quarterly payments from a trust total He has continued to acknowledge his past struggles with addiction, but has pushed back against claims that he is mentally ill, saying there is no evidence to support those claims made in Cher's petition.
“I know my mother's actions are meant to help me, but I don't need that help,” Allman argued. “My mother seems to think that controlling these quarterly trust distributions will prevent me from engaging in self-destructive behaviors. She is deluded. Should I be inclined to engage in self-destructive behavior, I don't need my confidence distributions to do so: the world is full of addicts and the mentally ill who have no confidence distributions to draw from. The only person who can save me from my demons is me — and that's exactly what I'm doing.”
Allman also adamantly claimed that he believed Cher was “unfit” to even serve as his conservator. Describing their “strained relationship”, Allman recalled an incident last October where Cher allegedly arranged for him to be flown to Mexico for what he was told was “holistic alternative therapy”.
But when he arrived, Allman said, “I was told I wasn't there for holistic/alternative healing and, in fact, I wasn't allowed to leave.” His wife, Allman said, had to hire a lawyer, who “negotiated my release from the facility in Mexico. (Cher has previously been accused of hiring four men to kidnap Allman in 2022 in an attempt to prevent him from reconciling with his then-estranged wife. Cher has denied the allegation.)
Allman further argued that Cher “doesn't manage her finances” and expressed “serious concerns about this court allowing her to manage” hers. He said his mother's personal assistant handled her “private and public affairs” and was concerned that any responsibility for his finances would be assigned to the personal assistant or others “with whom I have a negative relationship.”
Finally, Allman mentioned his mother's age and his own struggles with mental health in the past: “My mother is seventy-seven years old and she'll be seventy-eight when this comes up. I have seen her suffer from depression in the past and I do not believe she is capable of making the right decisions for my estate.”
Cher's attorney did not immediately return calls Rolling rockhis request for comment.
Cher filed her petition in December 2023, asking a Los Angeles court to make her the sole conservator of her son's estate, as he is “substantially incapable of managing his financial resources.” But Cher's initial efforts failed: First, Judge Jessica Uzcategui denied the emergency offer, saying Allman deserved more time to consider his mother's allegations. Then, a few weeks later, he was denied a temporary conservatorship after Uzcategui said there wasn't enough evidence to show Allman lacked the ability to manage his own affairs.
Cher scored a small victory in early March when Uzcategui refused to drop the conservatorship offer, giving the musician three months to gather medical records and pursue a private settlement. Allman's formal plea comes ahead of the next hearing in the case on June 11.
