Cynthia Erivo hopes to 'Inspire and Uplift' with a Headlining Performance at Stonewall Day 2024

Much has changed in the 55 years since the Stonewall uprising — and Cynthia Erivo is ready to celebrate the progress we have made.

In a statement on Tuesday (May 21), the LGBTQ+ advocacy group Pride Live has announced Erivo as the official headliner for the Stonewall Day 2024 benefit concert, which will take place on Friday, June 28. The celebration, which is set to mark the anniversary of the 1969 protests at New York's Stonewall Inn that spurred the LGBTQ+ rights movement in the US. will be hosted by MI! NewsJustin Sylvester and will feature appearances from DJ Lina Bradford, singer Conchita Wurst, pop group BETTY and singer Loren Allred.

In a statement released with the news, Erivo expressed its gratitude for being included in the lineup. “I am honored to perform on Stonewall Day and honor the legacy of Stonewall: In the face of hate and discrimination, the queer community rose up and fought for spaces where we could be free through music and dance,” she wrote. “I want my performance to inspire and rouse the audience to celebrate this important moment.”

Proceeds from the benefit concert will go to the Stonewall National Monument Visitor Center (SNMVC), which is also scheduled to open on June 28. A first-of-its-kind attraction in the National Park System, the SNMVC will aim to “preserve, promote and celebrate the legacy of the Stonewall Rebellion,” according to the center official webpage.

Meanwhile, Erivo is promoting her upcoming role as Elphaba in the highly anticipated film adaptation of Bad. Last week, fans got their first glimpse of Erivo's character in the film's official trailer, in which the actress delivered lines from the beloved Act I closing number “Defying Gravity” alongside co-star Ariana Grande.
