David Lee Roth has released new song “Scotch and Sofa.” The song is the latest in a series of one-off singles from the Van Halen singer, and might be the group's most eccentric.
With prominent horns, DLR dabbles in a bit of salsa/disco on the song. There's also a bit of the lounge and cabaret vibes that Diamond Dave has always had an affinity for. An Easter egg for Van Halen fans comes in the form of their choral performance of “scotch and sofa” – which shares the same cadence as “hot for the teacher.”
Roth shared the song on his YouTube channel under the title “Scotch and Sofa 4” but offered little else about its origin. Like his other recent singles following his “retirement,” the song could have emerged from recording sessions nearly a decade ago at Henson Recording Studios in Hollywood, California.
The recording sessions featured John 5 on guitar and bass, Greg Bissonette on drums, Brett Tuggle on keyboards, and Luis Conte on percussion. In 2022, John 5 mentioned that Roth's unreleased recordings share a singer-songwriter sound, although that's more descriptive of songs like “Lo-Rez Sunset” and “Pointing at the Moon” that we've already heard.
In other news, Roth continues to stir the pot in the Van Halen camp, starting a feud with Wolfgang Van Halen after unleashing a rant against his late bandmate's son. Since then, Wolfgang responded.
