Tina Turner's extraordinary legacy was honored with an impressive showcase at the 2024 Grammy Awards — first with some heartfelt words from her friend Oprah Winfrey, then with a stunning rendition of Fantasia Barrino's “Proud Mary.”
To wrap up the multi-performance In Memoriam segment at the Grammys, Winfrey took the stage to discuss the personal impact Turner, who died last May at age 83 after being a longtime fan, had on her, and how the legacy of Turner will continue to raise their stature in popular music. “Tina's voice continues to speak to all of us,” Winfrey told the arena crowd, before giving the stage to multi-instrumentalist Adam Blackstone and Barrino.
As a vocal powerhouse and consummate performer, Barrino took on the unenviable task of trying to resolutely replicate Turner's exuberance on stage, getting the crowd at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles up and moving on Sunday night (Feb. 4). . After starting the show on stage, Barrino strolled through the crowd as the tempo picked up, making Dua Lipa shake her hips before walking over to Beyoncé and Jay-Z's table and sitting on a platform in the center of the arena. Instead of ending the In Memoriam segment on a somber note, Barrino dazzled the audience and set the telecast on a high.
A former American Idol champion, Barrino recently starred The Color Purpleand won Best Female R&B Vocal Performance in 2011. The In Memoriam segment also featured performances from Jon Batiste and Annie Lennox, among others.
