Ireland's largest free street performance festival returns to Belfast city center from 4-9 May 2024. This year's exciting free daytime program offers three days of all-inclusive packed daytime entertainment for all the family, which includes circus, parkour, dance, archery and visual arts. Festival of Fools will inspire, entertain and engage, taking place at various venues across Belfast city and with all free daytime shows, this is a festival for everyone to enjoy!
As in previous years, the Festival of Fools brings together the best local and international circus and street talent who will take over the city streets over the bank holiday weekend in early May.
This year's program features award-winning talent from around the world, including Ireland, Canada, Italy, Argentina, Germany, France, Spain and Australia. In 2024, the program will once again encompass indoor and outdoor venues, with 2 Royal Avenue becoming a central hub for performances by young and emerging artists and drop-in workshops for children and adults alike. For fans of the visual arts, a new partnership with Leo Boyd and Laura Nelson will bring The Belfast that Time Forgot to life (in 3D) for audiences between shows inside 2 Royal Avenue. For the first time in 2024, Festival of Fools is working in partnership with Big Telly Theater to offer The Worst Café, an interactive experience for diners and Sailortown Regeneration Project on a walking tour from Big Fish and Hit the North, a street art festival locally directed. .
Expect an action-packed show from READY. AIM. FIRE! on Saturday and Sunday. Sara Twister is a crowd-stopping phenomenon who, while balanced on her arms, can shoot a bow and arrow with her feet! The Big Finish classic returns all three days, but with a twist, so stay tuned. Classic Connee will have you singing, JUMPNI will leave you breathless with some extreme parkour and there's also some classic aerial antics, juggling, acrobatics, custard fights and much more to see over the weekend.
In addition to the daytime program, FoF 2024 will also offer two very special, thought-provoking evening shows, Contra and Belonging, from May 8-9.
Gilly Campbell, Director of Arts Development at the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, added: “The Arts Council of Northern Ireland is delighted to support the Festival of Fools, thanks to National Lottery players. National Lottery funding is a game-changer by helping this festival spread wonder and joy across Belfast and bring communities together. Once again this year, the organizers have curated a fabulously fun program for all ages and tastes. From the very young to the young at heart, I would encourage everyone to get outdoors this May and enjoy all that this fantastic circus celebration has to offer.”
Jenna Hall, CEO of Festival of Fools, said: “We are so excited to launch Festival of Fools 2024! With over 50 professional shows taking place across the city, our all-inclusive program offers something for everyone.
Our strong partnership with 2 Royal Avenue continues in 2024 and again offers everyone the opportunity to participate and learn circus skills through a variety of workshops, a real hit at the 2023 festival.
We are very proud to deliver another brilliant Festival of Fools in 2024. We are also very grateful to our sponsors and audiences who donate so generously to keep us coming back year after year. “I can’t wait to showcase our talented artists across the city of Belfast.”
