Genevieve Glynn-Reeves, the 22-year-old British singer and leader of Gen and the Degenerates, isn't looking for sympathy from older generations. Limiting only the constant offensive and contrived concerns will be more than enough.
“There's so much criticism of Gen Z and millennials from older generations about how we spend our time and the kind of things we value,” says Glynn-Reeves, who with her four bandmates—guitarists Sean Sloan and Jake Jonesbassist Jay Humphreys and drummer Evan Reeves — turn the tables on the naysayers on their debut album album/56STnkZ21Pd3Wo6kJGlrKW” target=”_blank”>Anti-fun Propagandaout Friday (February 23) on Marshall Records.
Through tracks like “Kids Just Wanna Dance” and “That's Enough Internet for Today,” Gen and the Degenerates dissect the youthful experience beneath the Internet bubble, where every momentary mistake and mishap is fed into an algorithm and archived somewhere in the cloud.
This is troubling for Glynn-Reeves, who notes her dislike of permeability: “I don't even write the lyrics to my songs. If they're not good enough to be remembered, they should probably be forgotten.”
Born in Liverpool, Glynn-Reeves met her colleagues at Liverpool John Moores University in 2019 and has been honing the band's sound ever since, reaching for an 80s UK-meets-Manhattan Lower East Side style with fast-paced lyrical delivery and dance tracks reminiscent of Blondie, The Eurythmics and Duran Duran.
As part of the album release, the band present their newest single “Girls', a sassy anthem skewering TikTok talking heads criticizing 'girly behaviour'.
“I asked women on TikTok and people who featured women about weird misogynistic complaints their ex-boyfriends had about them,” says Glynn-Reeves. “It turned out to be all these silly things like, 'Oh, my ex would complain when I wore heels that made me taller than him,' so I made up the line, 'I like it when their shoes make them taller than me.' Because it's so ridiculous for men who claim to want to date women to then have all these conditions and criticisms about women.”
“And they say that without having any standards for themselves,” Jones added.
“We should celebrate these things and put them in a positive light and see them as desirable,” added Glynn-Reeve. “As a queer person, I would love to date a woman like that. that sounds great.”
