There's a very good reason Henry Winkler is considered one of the nicest guys in show biz. The eternally sunny 78-year-old Happy days The veteran always brings joy to his talk show appearances, that is, when he's not taking time to send fan notes to fellow artists he inspires.
During a visit to Live with Kelly and Mark On Tuesday (Oct. 15), Winkler was predictably excited about one of his recent kind letters that prompted an equally generous response when he shared how happy he was to receive a thank you video from Jelly Roll.
“Oh my god, that was the most amazing thing to come from you to respond,” Winkler told Ripa to receive an equally sweet response from the “I Am Not Okay” singer sent to the daytime show host. Winkler explained to the studio audience that he often writes what he calls “fan notes” to artists he admires. “And I wrote one on Jelly Roll, 'Dear Mr. Roll,'” he explained. “And I never thought I'd hear it again and all of a sudden I got a video from Kelly of Mr. Roll that pleases me!”
Ripa responded that being a conduit for mutual admiration society was “the most exciting thing that's ever happened to me… it was about you, so it had nothing to do with me. “It was great,” Winkler said before Ripa finished the tape.
“Hello, Mr. Winkler, it's Jelly Roll,” the singer said in the clip released on Ripa's device. “Just sending my love. I was hoping to see you because I got a note and was told it was from you. I couldn't believe it and this is my publicist – she hates to be embarrassed but now she is – and she told me it was you, she confirmed and I can't tell you how much that meant to me.”
Jelly promised to send Winkler a photo of the letter when she got home. “I hope you don't mind, I framed it. I hung it on my wall where I have handwritten lyrics from Craig Morgan, all the things that were really special in my career. Thank you, I am absolutely honored Mr. Winkler. I can't wait to see you and hopefully give you a hug. I'm a big hug, I'll hug you.”
During an appearance at Jimmy Kimmel Live! Last week, Winkler revealed for the first time that he had sent the letter to the country star. “I really believe that when I see something that I think is great, you should let the person know,” he told the late-night host, who got some of those cool notes. When asked who the most recent recipient was, Winkler said it was Jelly Roll, after an appearance on Kimmel's show.
“I wrote him a letter, 'Dear Mr. Roll,' and all of a sudden I got a video on my phone … it was amazing,” Winkler said. “I think he's so full of emotion.”
