While much of the Mexican ska scene of the 90s was comprised of ska-punk emerging out of Mexico City, one of the most important bands took influence from two-tone and settled in Monterrey: Inspector. In this episode of In defense of skaInspector bandleader and saxophonist Jesus Arriaga joins the group to talk about the ska community, his creative arc, and more. Arriaga traces Inspector’s journey from his early days releasing tapes with Pepe Lobo, to signing with a label and scoring radio hits, to playing to a crowd of 20,000 in 2023. He discusses tracks like “Amnesia” and “Amargo Adios” before detailing the Monterrey music festival he helped found, called Ska Wars, and the strange role El Chapo played in spreading ska across the country.
