Jill Scott she may be a beloved singer, but she's currently catching the wrath of X, ex-Twitter, after taking some time to show love to Chris Brown. When challenged about Brown's history of domestic violence, Jill Scott doubled down and seemingly defended her abusive stepfather because he happened to be an expert at laying a solid foundation.
In the early hours of Sunday (April 21), Jill Scott posted a tweet praising Chris Brown, who is currently having a war of words with Quavo of Migos fame.
From X:
@chrisbrown is amazing. How does ANYONE sing like that? Dance, look, act and rap… right? Beyond gifted. It seems that extraordinary people must have an extraordinary time [fire emoji]. There is nothing to discuss.
The Philadelphia singer was challenged by a user X who wrote: “I think the women she's abused would disagree,” to which Scott replied: “I doubt it. My mother's ex-husband was an evil, violent man AND he could lay foundations better than anyone in my town. What he did with cement was awe-inspiring. We escaped. He got a raise and praise for his ability. God took care of the rest.”
Scott's words drew a barrage of criticism from fans at X, who pointed out that Brown's praise and attempt to humanize her stepfather was a slap in the face to victims of domestic violence.
Scott continued to try to explain that he wasn't making excuses for her stepfather or trying to shift the blame. Her attitude, from what we gathered, is to note that terrible people often do terrible things, but they are also capable of change.
“Look. Years of prayer, healing, self-reflection, and trying hard to keep my feet on the ground have made me empathize with other human beings. People pass [poop emoji] and to do terribly [poop emoji]. We say we believe in God. pray for enlightenment. WE ARE a living testimony,” Scott wrote hours after her original comment.
At X, the backlash to Jill Scott picking on Chris Brown and fending off criticism has her near the top of the list on the social network. We have reactions from all sides below.
