Vallejo, California emcee Larry June is back with his 11th LP. He's been steadily kicking his ass since dropping out of high school, dropping his last 10 studio efforts as well as 14 EPs & 7 mixtapes featuring highlights from his ever-growing discography, including production by Lex Luger Trap Larrythe Cardo-production USA cruise & is the sequel In the late nightthe Harry Fraud-production Continue & most recently Jay Worthy's musically influenced collaborative effort 2 P'z in a PodThe Alchemist-production The Great Escape & The Night Shift. 9 months after the last one, Larry reassures him that it is Doing it for me.
Following the introduction of 'Free Uncle Herm 5', first song 'Magnum PI' is a futuristically slick West Coast opener that whips out the whip and looks like the lead character from the TV show, while 'Morning Calculations' in production of Harry Freud was early. stands out from the soulful instrumental to the lyrics that advise checking this bitch out instead of checking her out. “A Little While” has a spacious vibe thanks to Jake One and DJ Khalil telling his romantic interest that he's definitely looking good just before “Stinson Beach” continues with an awesome ode to not having a good day.
“Real Talk, Pt. 2” gives the Detroit trap a shot detailing the gangsta lifestyle he's been involved with on Cardo, bringing the synths to the fold for another favorite of mine “3 Piece” that fends off all the hate that comes his way since he's riding .''Where I'm Going'' revives the Detroit trap vibe warning that nobody wants war with him, but then 'Meet Me in Napa' was a decently spacious single discussing his desire to meet a woman in the honor valley of California.
The instrumentally jazzy boom bap flare of “Breakfast in Gold Coast” is a nice change of pace that speaks to its sunshine, while “Imported Couches” keeps the strings, kicks and snares together without making the match 1 blow away and focus his attention on doing his own thing. “Cleaning My Spot” keeps the jazz influences and strips down the drums working so hard to achieve their goals, while “Like a Mack” makes trap music for pimps.
“Dreams” push towards his final moments Doing it for me telling everyone who's sick of the reeds to come fuck the big dogs heading in a dystopian direction to the beat and closer “Money Bag” stuck Cookin' Soul ends by plugging a soul sample telling the world your people will snake You, others may twist you and the spades will play you here for the card.
Something surprising worth noting is that I found a lot Doing it for meHis singles are pretty mediocre which made me expect less then The Great Escape & The Night Shift when I found myself enjoying many of the songs on this new album more than I originally expected. The glitz and glamor of the guest stars are completely thrown out the window to deliver luscious bars over classic West Coast funk beats, reestablishing his status as one of the smoothest voices in hip hop today.
