Faye Webster is something of a cultural paradox. Her music has gone viral on TikTok, but she doesn't have her own account. She has almost a million more monthly listeners on Spotify than Grammy-winning boygenius, but half as many followers on Instagram. She is classifiable as an indie folk artist, but she moves in Atlanta hip-hop circles.
All this makes it quite difficult to pin down. And as revealed in our conversation with her to find out the latest news. Consequence cover article, Faye Webster: Hiding in Plain SightThat probably suits you well.

The last time we spoke with Webster, it was for a Consequence CoSign interview about the merit of his 2019 sophomore comprehensive study, Atlanta Millionaire Club. (That makes her the second artist to make the jump from CoSign to the cover, following in SZA's footsteps.) At the time, she had just come off a tour and had decided to cancel some future dates to rest. This time, she had just returned from a series of shows in Australia ahead of the March 1 release of Undressed at the Symphonyand while he won't be canceling his upcoming tour to support the release (get tickets here), admitted to being “overwhelmed… but in a good way, but excited.”
Although she has become more accustomed to all this, she is still herself, and that is something she would prefer to reveal in her songs. While she is honest, the conversation is guarded, as is her music, and she frequently presents one fact and withdraws two ironic comments. Apparently, she feels more comfortable when she is with friends. Whether recording with his longtime bandmates or longtime friends like “Lego Ring” collaborator Lil Yachty, or battling his friend Daniel Caesar in chess, or receiving Pokémon plush tokens from the fans at concerts.
Webster isn't the kind of parasocial star that has become so prevalent in recent years, and she's happy with that. She should perhaps be proud of that, as it has allowed her to take care of herself as her fame has grown. She is poorly dressed, but she is in the symphony. And if that allows her to continue posting such incredible art, who are we to question her instincts?
