Liam Gallagher and John Squire joined Zane Lowe on New Music Daily on Apple Music 1 to talk about their newly released song, 'Just Another Rainbow', and how it came about from a riff session. The pair also talk about their chemistry, how they came together to create music, and what fans can expect from their upcoming album.
Liam Gallagher on the song 'Just Another Rainbow' that comes easily from a riff…
That one was easy. It just came from a riff. First. It grew like bamboo. It's all about John. He wrote everything.
Liam Gallagher talks about working with John Squire…
I had no doubt they were going to be fucking great. He had no doubt that the music said it all. The clothes said it all, the attention to detail. He knew there would be no clowns in that band. So it was easy. It was all about me, not about acting like a jerk.
Liam Gallagher tells how they got together and John Squire told him he was writing songs…
John had played with us in Oasis, and then when we met, we went on tour with the Seahorses and stuff, and I wouldn't say we were mates, you know what I mean? We more or less knew each other. We were nice to each other, we had seen each other and that was all; We had a bit of a shoe fetish. We always talk about shoes and where you got them from, blah blah. And then make these songs again. I remember John just saying, “Look, I'm back to writing songs and stuff again,” which made me happy regardless of whether he was singing to it or something. He's making songs again and playing guitar and obviously he plays everything, so these songs come my way and I was doubly happy to sing them. I love them. And I think John is a songwriter that he is as good as he plays the guitar. And I'm sure people know it anyway, but it would be nice if more people knew it.
Liam and John on what fans can expect from their next album…
Liam Gallagher: there are 10 [songs] on the album, but we've done eight. We demoed eight of them in John's studio and then John did two more songs and we recorded them for the first time. I sang them for the first time in the United States, in Los Angeles. [The album] It does not have a title as such. It's just Liam and John, like Liam Gallagher and John Squire, really.
Juan Escudero: It's too late. We forgot a title. It's all printed.
Liam Gallagher: The next one will have one now.
Liam on recording the songs in three weeks at Greg Kurstin's studio…
These songs are amazing, and they're all great and everything. So yes, when she asked us to sing to her, I agreed. And then three came, and then three more came. Before you knew it I was in Macclesfield doing a demo at John's house and then I was off on tour. I met him in Los Angeles, at Greg's studio, and then we worked something out in about three weeks.
John Squire talks about playing guitar and making songs with Liam in mind…
Juan Escudero: I live on a hill and see a lot of rainbows from there when they are available. Well, it just turned out that I didn't have a particular drive or need to write a song that was about disappointment, but it comes across that way on the first listen. But I find it one of the most uplifting songs on the album.
Zane Lowe: Yes, it's a perfect balance between the two. It's my favorite shit. The songs that make me want to climb a mountain and at the same time feel like I'm at the bottom of it.
Liam Gallagher goes on tour…
We have a bassist, a drummer, a keyboard player on standby and if we need it, we'll try to approach it without a keyboard player and then a pianist and give it a little silliness, man, a little rawness. But if you need it, you need it. But yeah, we're going on tour. We're going to go do some concerts, see what happens and try to inspire people and make them happy. That's all really. And then do another one.
