In today's episode of Billboard's Chart Rewind, jazz musician Louis Armstrong dethrones the Beatles' “Can't Buy Me Love” and scores his first number one with “Hello Dolly” on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1964.
Tetris Kelly:
Louis Armstrong stops The Beatles on this week's chart rewind. We go back to 1964. The New Orleans-born trumpeter hit No. 1 on the Hot 100 with “Hello Dolly,” stopping The Beatles' 14 consecutive weeks atop the chart, rising above the band's “Can.” “Don’t buy me love.” Despite Beatlemania, “Hello Dolly” rose to the top in part thanks to the musical that was popular at the time. The song spent one week at the top and was their only No. 1 on the Hot 100.
