The Melvins have announced a new album, tarantula heartand shared the video for “Working the Ditch” ahead of the LP’s April 19 release date.
Considered one of the veteran band's most eccentric albums to date, tarantula heart sees King Buzzo and company collaborating with Ministry drummer Ray Mayorga and We Are the Asteroid guitarist and long-time Melvins partner Gary Chester, complementing the group's core lineup.
As heard on “Working the Ditch,” the additional instrumentalists result in new musical textures and an expanded sound, with double-tracked drums (Mayroga and Dale Crover outtakes stacked and edited together) and Chester’s lead guitar creating a post-metal haze. against Buzzo's most brutal riffs and barked vocals.
“The way we approach tarantula heart “It was unlike any other Melvins album,” explained King Buzzo, also known as Buzz Osborne, via the album’s press release. “I had Dale and Roy Mayorga come in and play along with Steven and I on some riffs, then I took those sessions and figured out what parts would work and wrote new music that fit. This is not a study approach we have ever taken. We generally have the songs written. before We start recording!
Crover added of drum production: “Most tarantula heart It has two drum parts. Roy is an amazing drummer. We would discuss what we would do pattern-wise and then just try it. Improvising riffs and exchanging drum beats.”
tarantula heart was recorded, mixed and co-produced by Melvins' long-time collaborator Toshi Kasai. Mackie Osborne created the artwork.
