In May, Royal Blood hit the headlines and became the subject of much online discussion when a short supercut video of singer and bassist Mike Kerr expressing his dismay at the crowd's reaction to the Big Weekend in Dundee went viral.
“I guess we should introduce ourselves seeing as nobody knows who we are,” Kerr said at the beginning of the clip. “We're called Royal Blood and this is rock music” – before asking the crowd: “Who likes rock music? Nine people. Brilliant.”
The clip also saw him comment on how we “had to applaud ourselves” as the crowd's response was “passionate”, and later left the stage with his middle fingers up.
Talking to you NME regarding the incident earlier this year, Kerr said: “I think now that some time has passed and the internet dust has settled, I understand. The magnitude to which the story has reached is in no way commensurate with its seriousness. The two look so unusual to each other. It seems so tame to me, still. It's not something I look back on and think was necessary. It was an unnecessary roast, but it amazes me that out of all the shit we've done as a band, this is the thing that took off. I think it says more about the attitude of social media and the witch hunt that is out there. I think we were just the cocktail of the day. It was not a pleasant experience.
He continued: “Some of the criticism I can sympathize with, especially if you only saw that one clip and not the whole concert – but the majority of it seemed so out of proportion to the level of anger. I refuse to be the source of that anger. I take no responsibility for this anger.”
Last month, Royal Blood were announced for the HellFest Open Air line-up alongside Metallica, The Prodigy, Avenged Sevenfold.
