Liara Tsai, a local Minnesota DJ and Trevor Project volunteer, was murdered at just 35 years old. Minnesota Public Radio reports.
Originally from Mauston, Wisconsin, the transgender musician had just moved from Iowa City to join the Minneapolis EDM community. With a focus on spirituality, the techno and house music-focused DJ was beloved for her ability to improvise throughout her shows.
According to friends in the community, Tsai was just beginning to gain popularity and a loyal fan base when the tragedy occurred. She often performed in Minneapolis through one of the city’s best-known promoters, Intellephunk, and had recently become a crisis advisor for the promotion brand.
In addition to her involvement in the music community, Tsai volunteered at Trevor Projecta nonprofit organization focused on suicide prevention among LGBTQ+ people.
According Parliamentary ParliamentThe DJ's ex-girlfriend, Margot Lewis, was charged with two counts of second-degree murder in Hennepin County, Minneapolis. Tsai's autopsy revealed she was found “with a puncture wound to the neck” and died as a result of “multiple sharp force injuries.”
Tsai and fellow DJ and friend Dana Kazuko were scheduled to perform their first joint show at the VFW Uptown in Minneapolis today, July 5. The performance will now be solely Kazuko, who plans to play Tsai’s music along with a video she has prepared, the organization’s website reports.
