It's no surprise that there's a documentary about Black Twitter, but the real Black Twitter, or Black X, should we call it that? Nah, we'll stick with the original name, it's on the skeptical side of who's involved.
The docuseries from former Insecure showrunner Prentice Penny coming to Hulu haven't even been released. However, a trailer for it is being met with huge skepticism due to people getting involved and talking about the influential and popular Twitter sub-section now unfortunately known as X thanks to Elon Musk.
According to a press release. The series will take its cues from Jason Parham's 2021 Wired cover, “A People's History of Black Twitter”, and “characterizes the rise, movements, voices, and memes that made Black Twitter a powerful and dominant force in nearly every aspect of American political and cultural life.”
Helping break the Twitter sub-section into popularity and ultimately keep the social media platform on its back will be Roxane Gay, Gemele HillSam Jay, Amanda Seales, Kid Fury, April Reign, Raquel Willis, Apple Music's LowKey, Chris Foxx aka @FoxxFiles and more.
Backlash to The Black Twitter documentary has already fallen apart
Therein lies the issue: many believe that many people are left out of this documentary and give it the wrong eye.
One user X wrote: “The real meat and potatoes of Black Twitter are the everyday people. No black celebrities and B-list pseudo-intellectual Talking Heads.'
Exhibition.
Another user on X pointed out how crazy this discussion is, writing in the post: “Black Twitter arguing about whether this Black Twitter documentary will include all the right people and topics is the blackest thing on Twitter. has ever been done.”
Prentice Penny also joined the conversation, adding: “I would I'd like to think that after 20 years of keeping the culture down, you'd trust that I got it #blacktwitterhulu best interest in mind. But low key, I also love black Twitter, insanely hesitant and trivial! HAHAHA!”
When this documentary hits Hulu on Thursday, May 9, it seems likely that there will be a lot of hate-watching and live-tweeting.
